Sunflower Blog - Link Building......A Reality Check
Introduction
Link building is the sometimes (often!) thankless task of sifting through web site after web site in a bid to find potential link partners. Often it can take days and weeks to come up with a quality list - and you haven't even started to contact those people to discuss building a link relationship!
Great Content? - Probably Not!
The most hyped method of link building is of course building great content (so people link to you naturally). That is true and you can achieve the 'moth to flame' scenario via great content - but it takes a lot of ongoing effort and hard work to build up and many people simply do not have time, don't make time or simply can't see the benefits.
Still Got A Brochureware Website? - You're Not Alone!
In reality, many site owners never get past the brochure web site - so why should people link to it? The reality is that they won't unless they are incentivised - and that takes a link building budget.
Ok, we still know of places where you can get free links such as DMOZ (by the way if you haven't listed yourselves there yet - do it now) and of course, we keep our own inventory of free links, but the options are dwindling rapidly.
Caught On
Most site owners have caught onto the fact that a backlink carries benefits, so unless you can establish that great content, you are faced with figuring out an advertising budget and spending it wisely.
If Your Serious
If you are serious about developing a search marketing campaign, you need to treat link building as another piece of the marketing mix and allocate funds accordingly.
